Music

At Hazelwood Schools, we are proud to provide a rich and diverse experience of music for all of our children.

We believe that Music has a positive impact on children’s personal and creative development as well as all areas of learning.

As part of our Music curriculum, we provide opportunities for children to express themselves creatively, build confidence, develop co-ordination and enhance their communication skills. Music is a universal language, connecting us and bringing us together as a whole community.

The aims of our Music Curriculum are:

  • To provide real, relevant, immersive and purposeful opportunities for children to develop skills in singing, listening, composing and performing
  • To listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres and traditions
  • To sing and use voices creatively
  • To create and compose
  • To learn to play a variety of musical instruments
  • To develop an understanding of music and its inter related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and musical notations

Wider Opportunities

Children take part in a wide range of musical activities beyond the National Curriculum. Children in Year 4 are given the opportunity to learn an instrument and perform to their parent/carer in a special assembly. We are proud to have two choirs, wind band and string group as well as concerts and other opportunities throughout the school year. Children in the choir have taken part in a One Voice concert at the O2 in London and performances to celebrate local events such as the turning on of the Palmers Green Christmas Lights. Children who take part in ensembles and the orchestra have regular opportunities to perform to others. Those who are learning a musical instrument, or sing, are asked to perform in our regular music assemblies, showcasing their talent.
