Rainbow Fish

In Nursery, the children have been focusing on the story "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister. After listening to the story the children discussed how the Rainbow fish and the Little Blue fish felt at different points in the story. They thought about how they would feel about having to share their favourite toys. There were lots of opportunities to practice developing their fine motor skills through finger painting rainbows, using tweezers to pick up the correct coloured pom poms to match to the colours of the rainbow and picking up rainbow-coloured rice. The children looked at the numerals and counted out the same number of shiny scales for the fish to match. The children were really excited as they carried out the Skittles experiment. They observed the colour dissolving from the skittles into the water to create a rainbow. There was also the opportunity to observe and explore real fish, using magnifying glasses!

Planting TreeS

Naomi, our school gardener, came in to work with all the children in the Nursery. They planted many tree saplings in front of the Nursery as part of the Young Tree Champions Project with the Tree Council. What an exciting project to be part of! Our Nursery children will be able to see how the trees they planted grow over time and will learn how to take care of them.  This was a wonderful opportunity to nurture our youngest responsible citizens to begin to look after and protect our trees and our planet.

Goldilocks and the three Bears

We have been focusing on the traditional tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have been taking on the roles of the characters and practising using a different voice for each character, getting more and more upset as they see what Goldilocks has done in their home. We were able to design and make bear collage using a range of materials. We had lots of opportunities to explore oats including using them to mark make with rubber tipped brushes.  We even made our own porridge and ate it all up, just like Goldilocks.

Baking Banana Bread!

We love cooking in Nursery! As part of our learning all about looking after our bodies, we have been talking about healthy and unhealthy food. We made our own banana bread and talked about healthy snacks as well as hygiene when cooking, such as washing our hands and tying back long hair.

It's so cold!

It is never too cold for the Nursery children to explore outside! We have loved using our senses to explore the ice in our outdoor area and find ways to make it break and melt! So much freezing fun!

Squiggle While you Wiggle

We have started an exciting new Early Writing Program created by Shonette Bason. Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle uses dance and large movements to help children develop the fine muscle control they need for writing. The children loved using their "Flipper Flappers" to create their movements.

We're going on leaf hunt!

In Nursery, the children have been focusing on the story "We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt" by Steve Metzger. They joined in with the repeated lines in the story.

"We’re going on a leaf hunt, we’re going right away."

and

"Let’s find colourful leaves, it’s a wonderful day"

They also went on their very own leaf hunt around the school and collected lots of lovely colourful leaves. The children then used these leaves to make leaf crowns, leaf people and hedgehogs.  They have shown the value of creativity when using their fingerprints to create leaves for trees and used their fine and gross motor skills to thread leaves and make leaf rubbings.
