Bog Baby Workshop with Jeanne Willis- Author Visit
The children had a lovely visit from the author of Bog Baby, Jeanne Willis. She welcomed them by introducing herself, reading the story which they have been focusing on in English and answering any questions. Jeanne then continued her visit by going into each classroom and helped to guide the children to make their very own Bog Baby out of clay and crafty resources such as feathers, googly eyes and paint. The children then created a home for their Bog Baby by collecting small twigs, sticks and leaves. Click here to see lots of photos and videos!
Forest School Fun!
The children have had lots of fun during their Forest School sessions. They were introduced to the new season of Autumn. They went on a hunt for loose treasure such as golden grass, sticks and crunchy leaves. Using the items, they made an autumn picture in the garden. They used blackberries to tie-dye strips of material. They had fun exploring the nature garden and collecting natural resources and minibeasts. Finally, they made blackberry cakes with playdough, heard an autumn story and even ate some tasty fruit!
Fun in History!
The children listened to Gill Connor, an ex-student and current staff member at Hazelwood Schools, about her experience when she was a little girl. She discussed the similarities and differences between the past and present such as the whole school had lunch together in a building called, Lacey Hall, which now stands to be Hazelwood Nursery. Living evidence also include the playground equipment and games they played, the type of food served, change of uniform and the boys and girls separating for class photos.
Fun in Year 1!
This week, the children have been immersing themselves into the story of 'Beegu'. The children arrived into school to see that a spaceship had crash landed into our gardening area!! This hooked the children into our story. Throughout the week the children participated in a range of activities including:
· Building a ship for Beegu to get home in using lego.
· Developing their fine motor skills by creating a collage of a spaceship and writing some simple sentences using the keywords from the story.
· Making masks of Beegu and role playing the story. They put themselves into Beegu’s shoes and thought about how Beegu’s feelings changed throughout the story.
In Maths, the children sorted and counted a range of objects. These included coins, compare bears, counters and many more. The children worked in pairs to sort and count the objects in 3 different ways.
