Legoland!

Year 4 had an amazing day full of fun, creativity and adventure at LEGOLAND! Early in the morning, our very enthusiastic children boarded the coach for a thrilling journey to Windsor. Once they arrived at the park, the children experienced lots of exciting activities. One of the highlights was a special workshop where the Hazelwood engineers built their own roller coasters using LEGO! With motors, batteries and tablets, they used coding to make their creations move, stop, play music and even light up in different colours that matched the beat.

They also explored Miniland, a giant area made from nearly 40 million LEGO pieces! The children were amazed by mini versions of famous landmarks like Buckingham Palace, the Taj Mahal and the Egyptian pyramids. Throughout the day, the children happily swapped badges with the LEGOLAND staff, adding to the fun.

Of course, no trip to LEGOLAND would be complete without exciting rides! Everyone, including the adults, had a blast racing around the tracks and soaring high in the sky. For 4R, the best ride was ‘Flight Of The Sky Lion,’ while 4O loved the fun-filled ‘Mia’s Riding Adventure’ and 4M had a fantastic time at ‘Deep Sea Adventure.’

It was a day full of laughter, learning and unforgettable moments. We are so proud of Year 4 for their creativity, courage and excellent behaviour throughout the trip!

Flute concert

In Year 4, the children have been learning to play the flute in their music lessons, since September. They finally got to show their parents and carers what they have been working on during an amazing flute concert. The children performed eight catchy tunes with individual classes taking the lead for some of them. You can have a listen and see some more photos, here. Our wonderful flute teacher Mrs Hember talked us through how hard the children have been working and how challenging it is to learn to play the flute. The children sounded wonderful and can be very proud of their achievements.

Still life art

The children took part in a special still life Art lesson. Each child brought in a treasured item from home, whether it was something with a memory or simply something that inspired them. Together, they arranged their objects and got to work, creating beautiful drawings, which they then painted. They took inspiration from famous artists like Paul Cézanne and Hilary Pecis, consolidating skills like shading, rubbing, smudging and even dotting. Their final artworks were fabulous!

roman day!

Year 4 had an amazing day full of Roman fun and learning. The children, along with their teachers, dressed up as brave Roman soldiers, powerful emperors and wise patricians, ready to conquer the day.

They started by diving into the world of Roman numerals, cracking the codes of I, V, X, C and M. Using lolly sticks, they created these ancient symbols and discovered the secrets behind Roman maths. They also learnt about Roman architecture and how the Romans built straight roads with strong stones to travel faster.

In the afternoon, the children unleashed their creativity, building their own mini Roman towns! They included all the important Roman features like public baths, temples, libraries and busy food stalls. The adventure didn’t stop there! Like real historians and archaeologists, the children examined Roman artefacts, piecing together parts of history. They also practised their art skills by sketching the ancient relics they studied, using shading, rubbing, smudging, dashing and dotting which they've been learning in Art this half term. Also, the children explored how mosaics, sculptures and frescos tell us what life was like 2000 years ago.

Maths Parent Workshop: Problem-Solving!

What a fantastic time the children had during the Year 4 Maths Parent Workshop! Parents and children teamed up for a hands-on lesson focused on perimeter and area, where they used Numicon and squares to create a variety of shapes and problem solve together. The activity was to explore how different shapes can have equal perimeters and areas and what happens when more squares are added to a shape.

It was lovely to see both parents and children thinking critically, experimenting with different shapes and working through challenges as a team. The energy in the classrooms was electric as everyone tackled problems, shared ideas and discovered new insights about the relationship between perimeter and area. Thank you to all the parents who came in to support their children – your involvement made this workshop a truly special experience!

PSHE with John Gilbert

This half term, Year 4 have had an exciting opportunity to work with the wonderful John Gilbert in their PSHE lessons! The children have delved into important topics like human rights, responsibilities and how they can make a positive impact at Hazelwood School.

John guided the year group through discussions where the children learnt to express themselves confidently, respectfully and courteously in front of their peers. The classrooms have been full of energy as the children eagerly shared their thoughts, making each lesson a fun and memorable experience.

Many of our Year 4s have loved these lessons so much that they've joined John’s Thursday morning newspaper club, where they continue to learn, explore and develop their skills.

sewing morning

The children had an absolutely fantastic time in their recent Design and Technology lesson, leaving them filled with joy and excitement! This hands-on, interactive project involved creating beautiful, winter-themed 3D hanging decorations and it was made even more special thanks to the incredible support of our wonderful families. Parents joined the children in sewing the decorations, using a variety of stitches including running, cross and straight stitches. The result was a stunning array of winter decorations that reflect the true spirit of teamwork, creativity and shared joy.

States of matter

Year 4 had an exciting experience with a States of Matter workshop from Explorer Dome! This interactive session brought their science lessons to life as they explored the fascinating processes of evaporating, condensing, melting and freezing. The children had the chance to see first-hand how materials change between solids, liquids and gases. Many children showed great curiosity and courage when participating in the demonstrations.

In these fun, interactive workshops, Year 4 explored the essentials of money management, learning skills they’ll use for life.

They kicked off by discovering where money comes from, learning that children can start working at 13! Year 4 learnt about banks and the differences between savings and current accounts, plus all the ways to pay for things, from cash to Apple Pay. They put their knowledge to the test by helping Zaria figure out the best bank accounts for her needs.

Next, the children tackled budgeting! With real-world scenarios, Year 4 made choices to spend or save their set budgets, tracking each decision and finding out if they were “Super Savers” or “Savvy Spenders.”

In the final session, they learnt why savings matter and set personal goals. Children created their own money boxes, decorated with goals and positive habits, inspiring them to save for the future.

The Felix Project

4O has proudly been supporting The Felix Project by creating food packages for our most vulnerable families. The children have actively participated in assembling these packages to ensure that those in need receive essential provisions. Additionally, they have set up an after school stall where community members can collect food items. This initiative has not only helped provide vital resources but has also fostered a sense of community and compassion amongst our children and families. Together, we have made a positive impact on the lives of those who need it most.

A visit to the Sha’arei-Tsedek Synagogue!

4M and 4R had an exciting trip to the Sha’arei-Tsedek Synagogue, where they learnt all about Jewish traditions. As they entered the beautiful synagogue room, they discovered the Tallit, a special prayer shawl with fringes called tzitzit, worn during morning prayers and on Yom Kippur.

The children were thrilled to see the Torah scrolls, which are topped with a crown called the Keter and have bells that make a gentle sound. They even got a chance to look closely at a Torah and learnt that it is made from animal skin. They found out an interesting tradition: if a Torah falls on the floor, the person responsible cannot eat for 28 days!

To top off their visit, the children enjoyed some delicious challah bread, a special treat during Rosh Hashanah. This bread symbolises asking for forgiveness and starting fresh in the new year. This visit not only taught the children about Jewish culture but also sparked their curiosity and respect for different traditions in our world.

A Class act

Year 4 had a really great time at their Make Believe Class Act workshop. They showed the values of respect to our visitor and many of them were extremely creative. During the workshop, the children played fun drama games and had a blast working together in teams to make freeze frames inspired by some really cool objects. Can you spot the objects in our photographs?

Year 4 Crack the Zoo Enclosure Code!

Year 4 took on an exciting mathematical challenge and problem solved like true number detectives! The task? To help a zookeeper find the perfect numbers for four new animal enclosures. Using their knowledge of place value, partitioning and comparing numbers, our young problem-solvers had to ensure the enclosures were ordered correctly and had enough space between them. But the fun didn’t stop there! In an extra challenge, they rounded their numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000, discovering how rounding changes the value of their enclosures.

The classrooms were buzzing with excitement as the children worked in groups, testing different numbers, debating their choices and solving the zoo’s tricky puzzle. Not only did they demonstrate fantastic teamwork and reasoning, but they also had a great time sharing their creative solutions.

into the forest

Year 4 has been on an amazing adventure into the mysterious world of ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne. They kicked things off by making exciting predictions, wondering what hidden secrets the forest might reveal. Then, during a captivating picture walk, they delved into the book’s illustrations, discovering fascinating details that sparked their imaginations. Stepping into the shoes of the brave boy who took a shortcut through the forest, they took a real forest walk in the forest school area. Along the way, they searched for nouns like branches, shadows and footprints, and used ambitious adjectives to create expanded noun phrases. The children loved every moment of this immersive experience!

They continued showing creativity and crafted their own magical stories. The children's tales were sprinkled with vibrant language, from expanded noun phrases to enchanting similes and captivating direct speech, all of which breathed life into their captivating adventures through the forest.

A Promising Year Ahead

Year 4 has had an incredible start to the new school year, embracing Year 4 life with enthusiasm and energy. They have settled in beautifully, showing great eagerness to learn.

During the first week, Year 4 embarked on a journey of self-discovery by reading ‘The Name Jar’ by Yangsook Choi. Through this, they explored the concept of identity and the significance of names in shaping who they are. After hearing Unhei's story, they reflected on their own names, considering what they mean and how they make each individual unique. They then created personalised name bookmarks to represent their identities, helping them better understand one another. The children also wrote powerful speeches about their identities, reflecting on their past, present and future.

Their curiosity has also been sparked by topics such as the Rhine, the Roman Republic and Living Things and their Habitats. Some children have already begun sharing interesting facts about these topics.

With such a positive and exciting beginning, there is a lot of anticipation for what the rest of the year will bring!
